Home Alarm Systems – Home Security

Installing an alarm system in your home in Calgary isn’t just about protecting your property; it’s also about protecting the people in your home, your family. A properly designed alarm system incorporates several different forms of protection intrusion detection, burglar alarm, fire and smoke detection, panic and emergency alerts, Carbon Monoxide Detectors (co2) alerts, swimming pool alarms. Let’s take each of these individual systems in turn.

Intrusion Detection

I count intrusion detection as somewhat different that burglar detection. Burglar detection can often be accomplished in a satisfactory manner by using motion detectors. Intrusion detection is a little different, for that you want to stop the person from actually entering the home. This form of detection is far more involved and costly. This form of detection is used to protect the occupants of the house in addition to protecting the property in the house in the event of a burglary.

Intrusion detection requires that you stop an unauthorized visitor at each possible point of entry before they are able to enter the house. This is usually done with door and window contacts as well as glass break protection.

Door and Window Contacts: These are small magnetic switches that notify the alarm panel if the door or window is opened. This only works if the intruder actually opens the window or door. This provides no notification if the window is broken and the intruder crawls in through the still closed window. Getting wire to each door and window is easily accomplished during the construction phase of a house. This can be far more difficult with a house that is already completed, but a quality alarm company can always find a way to secure a door or window. When buying Alarm systems in Calgary from Union Alarm, you can rest assured that all your doors and windows are well protected.

Glass Break Protection: These are electronic devises that actually listen for the sound of breaking glass. When a window breaks the sound that it emits follows a particular pattern. Different types of glass and different types of window installation create different patterns. For this reason glass break protection can be a bit harder to rely on. The device must be properly installed and set for the right glass type and conditions in the room. You then use testers to check to see if the detector picks up the frequencies properly and triggers an alarm. Because of the greater chance of the detector missing a true glass break it is usually advisable to only use this in conjunction with other notification devices to insure the trespasser is caught.

Burglar Alarms

In addition to the intrusion detection mentioned above you can add other devices that will detect movement within the house setting off the alarm. Usually motion detectors are used for this but at times an alarm company will also choose to use beam detectors. Motion detectors will catch all motion within its visible range; this can sometimes cause false alarms. To combat false alarms there are a number of different styles of motion detectors.

Home Alarm Systems

Pet resistant Motion detectors: These motion detectors will only detect movement of animals over a certain size. Small dogs and cats are ignored as well insects (unless they actually land on or are right in front of the detector)

Duel Tech Motion Detectors: These incorporate two styles of motion detector, Passive infrared and microwave. If a heat source moves in the room the microwave detection turns on and checks if the source is solid. This helps prevent against false alarms due to air movement and usually insects.

Arming the System

Home alarms almost always have two ways to arm the system. Often they are called Home and Away, other times Go and Stay, what every the case is, one is for when you are arming the system with the plans of staying in the house (such as when you go to bed), the other is when you are planning to leave the house.

You arm Home when you plan on staying in the house. This turns on all of the intrusion detection, door and window contacts, glass break protection etc, but does not turn on the interior burglar detection usually motion detectors.

Other parts of the system remain on at all times. The most notable are your fire and smoke detectors but this can also include Carbon Monoxide Detectors (co2). Wireless, hardwired and keypad operated panic alarm are also armed at all times.

Panic / Emergency Alarms

Hard wire or wireless panic can be installed on alarm systems. These panic alarms can be located in a fixed location like near a bed or can be on wireless keychain pendant of necklace pendants. These can be used to either set off an audible alarm or to contact the central station of both.

Most alarm keypads have buttons on the front that allow for emergency notifications of different types. The most common is panic or hold up, fire and medical. Each of these will alert the central station to the particular problem. In most cases the central station will call the police, fire department or 911 immediately and then try to call your house to confirm.

One other interesting thing to note is that many alarm systems also have an emergency disarm method. This is an alternate code that you type into the keypad that turns off the alarm system but will notify the monitoring company that there is an armed robbery in progress. The idea here is if you are coming home and someone meets you at the door and forces you to disarm the system, you put this code in and the person believes that you only disarmed the system. In reality you have notified the monitoring company that you are in need of immediate assistance and they notify the police. These panic alarms are treated with a much higher priority than a standard burglar alarm.

Swimming pool alarms

These can be in the form of a beeping sound when ever a door leading out to a pool is opened to satisfy the requirements states like California have for pool alarms or they can be loud audible that will sound if something causes waves in the pool (like a child falling in).
